For Those Who Participated in The Operation Shoebox Project

I've been away from my blog for a while. No, I wasn't on vacation. My Mother fell and broke her hip and has been hospitalized. It was a rough week for her with many setbacks on the way to surgery but she finally had the surgery and is recovering. If you can say a small prayer for her as you go about your day, I'd appreciate it.

We have just celebrated Memorial Day and I can think of no better way to continue our thanksgiving to our troops then sharing with you the letters I received in today's mail from Opearation Shoebox.

Here is the first one from the director of Operation Shoebox:

"The generosity of your very special gift reflects your thoughtfulness and concern for our military heroes. We at Operation Shoebox welcome this opportunity to acknowledge your selfless act and thank you on behalf of all the men and women of our armed forces."

Underneath the message is a quote: "Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime." Adlai E. Stevensson, Jr.

Next, was a letter:

Dear Operation Shoebox Volunteers,

On behalf of myself, SPC (I have removed her name), and the 150 soldiers of A Co 82nd BSB out of Ft. Bragg, NC, we would like to take a moment to thank you for what you've done. I recently took it upon myself to enter our entire company into your program. Little did I know that we would receive so much. 3 weeks later and nearly 200 handmade, handpacked bags later we have nothing but gratitude and the deepest respect for your association and all of your volunteers. The intent of enrolling in this was to afford soldiers not receiving any mail from home the opportunity to know "someone" out there cares. As you know morale and spirits can get down out here and gestures such as this help immensely. You and others alike are what help so many of us make it through out here. If only you knew the impact a little gift can have on the heart and mind, then you might be able to grasp what it is you really do. There is no thank you large enough. We truely appreciate what you've done. We will proudly fight for you.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. A Co 82nd BSB

And, a big thank to you my dear readers for so willingly sharing your hearts.

I am so sorry to hear about your mother. Sending good thoughts and prayers her way.
Now that I'm older (and have osteoporosis),falling...and breaking something, is one of my biggest fears. So I give this advise to you, and all your readers...get a bone density scan as soon as recommended by your physician!
I'll get off my soap box now;-)

BUt on the up side the letter from OSB was great. It inspires me to participate and that is just what our country needs right now. Thanks for sharing that with us.
