For Those Ladies Who Are Tired of Cooking

Thanks everyone for the well wishes for the 4th. I hope your holiday was filled with festivities, family and fun.

Here, on Red Pine Mountain, we had a lazy day. Thunderstorms rolled through, rain teemed down upon the roof, my internet connection was sporadic and it was chilly and damp necessitating a fire in the wood stove. And, while I sat reading a book, lazily reaching down to pet the dogs sleeping by the couch, I listened to the hum of activity in the kitchen. Mountain Man was preparing our holiday feast; homemade potato salad, barbecued chicken, fresh asparagus and apple tart. As I turned the pages of my novel, I was enchanted by wonderful aromas and the promise of a full, satisfied belly. Yes, there are actually those of us women like to eat too.

We have all heard the phrase "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach" but what about us women who can't wield the mighty saucepan, who look at a cookbook and have our eyes glaze over? Does that mean we are to remain loveless forever? Doomed to days of loneliness because our flambes don't flame and our souffles don't rise? No, ladies, I'm here to tell you for those of us who are less than adept in the kitchen, there is still hope.

You have to have a strategy though. First, search for a man who had a wonderful relationship with his Mother. He spent time with her in the kitchen munching on cookies fresh from the oven, licking cake batter spoons and being the first to sample delectables cooked by his Mother's loving hands. His appreciation for all things culinary will have been inculcated over the years.

Next, search for a bachelor who has been on his own for a number of years and is used to cooking for himself. Not a bachelor who runs to the local eatery for his meals but one who loves to entertain and delight his friends with his newest creation. He knows the difference between a microwave and a pressure cooker, has his personal preference in cookware and spices adorn his shelves.

Okay, you've found that perfect bachelor. What next? How do you keep him from relinquishing the cooking duties to you?

Well, here's my story. I didn't set out to have it happen this way, really I didn't but when it comes to cooking, everything I touch goes up in flames. Luckily, we have a fire extinguisher close at hand.

My attempts to surprise Mountain Man with grilled chicken.

Attempting to cook lasagna in the oven.
Surveying one of my burned meals. "You expect me to eat this?"
Mountain Man, smiling and happy again, after banning me from the kitchen. And me, well, I'm content to be reading my book sitting by the fire which is nicely contained within the wood stove.
Ladies, sometimes the way to a man's heart is to stay away the kitchen and let him take charge.

Wow! Lucky you! My man cooks, but only when he feels like it. If it was just him and I, I'd probably just serve him salads, but with a child and another adult here,I end up fixing full meals.Makayla needs a balanced diet.

LOL! Those flames say it all. Glad you had a good 4th with real food not just burned embers. :)

those flames remind me of my BBQ skills.

You are definitely one lucky woman! Glad you guys had a relaxing 4th... we did the same.

His daughter and family left by 9:00 a.m., so we had the whole day to ourselves, and since we busted our butts Thurs and Fri, yesterday was chill day. A nice day. :)

Joe likes to cook at our house too, so that's fine with me. He gets all flustered if I take over and make dinner if he is here. He also does the grocery shopping. I cut the lawn and help with the repairs, so I guess we are sort of backwards.

Oh, I LOVE the apron! ;)

Quick call 911!! Do you even have that there up on the mountain? Those were some serious flames! So glad he takes very good care of you! Your dinner sounds just delicious. Here's to a great week ahead! I sent you an e-mail about healthcare, it was interesting.

Your advice on finding a man is good. Gerard met both those requirements and never expected me to do any cooking. He takes care of cooking, if and when we do it. Mostly, we manage just fine with not cooking. You sound like me in the kitchen. Just never got into that.

What a great story. My husband splits the cooking duties and sometimes for giggles we cook together...always ends up in a smooch fest

My husband can boil water but then he doesn't know what to do with it!

I've always got along really well with my mother, but cooking never interested me.

I don't even know how to start a BBQ...so your doing better than me, well maybe not. I cooked chicken on one once....turned black.

I know a lot of woman whose husbands do the cooking.

My ex was a better cook than I. And in the famous restaurants, aren't the top chefs male? So whoever thought women should be the cooks in the family had it all backwards as far as I am concerned.

But now I find myself with a houseful of international students--all male--and I am the chief cook and bottle washer! LOL My cooking gets us by, but there is nothing outstanding about it!

I am a lucky woman, too! My husbands mother became ill when he was 12, and passed away when he was 17.Hence, any "house" chore he is very capable of. He was also a VERY self-sufficient single guy! If I never wanted to cook again, J would be fine with that! But we both love to cook and do so together often.

In your case, Mountain Woman, I think Mountain
Man is wise to keep you out of the kitchen and away from the grill! I've never seen anyone set the oven on fire baking Lasagna!!!

have an awesome monday :) Misha

Oh, and J rolled with laughter when I showed him this post!! He loved the pics of the grill!

It would be wonderful to eat someone elses cooking again.

Thankfully, my hubby is one who cooks. I can but don't like to. He likes to.

If that's the way to a man's heart PLEASE sign me up for the journey!! My husband cooks so seldom we all stand staring, aghast, every time he does and he's a GREAT COOK!!!! Please publish a tutorial on how to get them to actually do it though they have the skill. The couch and my book and totally waiting for me!

You are so lucky! I decieded early on I wasn't going to drive a tractor! I haven't and when I was forced to I was asked to go ahead and go back to the house.

Now I will do lots of other things, dig ditch, chase water, weed, hoe, whatever, but not drive the tractor!
